We are against sale of British Waterways assets

The Government is proposing to sell these assets and privatise them. We think that this is highly undesirable becaue:-

• Properly maintained waterways are a catalysts for regeneration and economic growth
• They currently support thousands of jobs and businesses across the UK
• Privatisation could lead to a a partial or permanent closure of some waterways
• Sale would be against the public interest and increase the risk of flooding
• Businesses wholly dependent on the waterways require usable, safe environment
• Asset sale would lead to increased costs for related businesses and reduce economic viability of the canals
